11 members of the San Francisco Quilters Guild have started a monthly meeting exploring surface design on fabric. Solarfast, the new Jaquard product that is sun sensitive was our first exploration.
Here are the samples of our work. Our critique is that for the money, the results were disappointing. We bought special transparency sheets to run through the printer (at $1.50 a piece), special dyes and special soap to run through the washer. The idea is to put an image on the transparency, paint the fabric with Solar Fast, put the image on the painted fabric, top with glass, place in the sun, and watch the image appear. First, there were no instructions on how to get a great image onto the transparency and we struggled with this. Then, the transparencies which are supposed to be good for several applications, started degrading with moisture while in the sun changing color. It is a great way for getting lots of small detail like in the ardvark below, but Setacolor would be more cost effective for most applications. Because of the cost, it would take $$ to really figure out how to make it work better, but we are glad we tried it.
